Has Facebook Surpassed Google Traffic for Publishers, Magazines?

I was stunned when reading the September issue of Advertising Age - stunned because for the first time in a LONG time, I was actually reading the print version - but also because of a metric I read in the article, "What's the most social of all media?" Cosmopolitan Magazine effectively refers 16% of their overall web traffic from their Facebook page! (It is a nice page,? https://www.facebook.com/Cosmopolitan) That is just 4% less traffic from than they receive from Google! You know, that search engine that drives 67% of online search traffic. Amazing. But this massive opportunity to engage online with offline readers is not being capitalized on by many other top magazine brands (by circulation). National Geographic, Women's Day and Good Housekeeping to name a few saw only single digit traffic referrals from Facebook by comparison. According to this coverage article on the Talk NYC site, NYU professor Scott Galloway told a?session of the annual American Magazine Conference hosted by MPA in New York on October 5th that magazine publishers are facing a crucial turning point - going so far as to say "your livelihoods are being threatened" by other industries and marketers who are outpacing their focus and results in the "platform that matters."
